Chakri dynasty

The current dynasty

The Chakri Dynasty was founded 1782.
The kings of this dynasty are also know as Rama and then their succession number.
Not all of these kings are (well) known by the Thai. Most Thai only know Rama I (as founder of the dynasty), Rama V and of course Rama IX.

Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok (Rama I) was the founder of the Chakri Dynasty.

Rama I was born on 20.03.1737 and died on 07.09.1809 at the age of 72. He reigned from 06.04.1782 until his death. (27 years).

Phutthaloetla Naphalai (Rama II) was the son of Rama I.

Rama II was born on 20.02.1767 and died on 21.07.1824 at the age of 57. He reigned from 07.09.1809 until his death (14 years).

Nangklao (Rama III) was the son of Rama II.

Rama III was born on 31.03.1788 and died on 02.04.1851 at the age of 63 years. He reigned from 21.07.1824 until his dead (26 years).

Monkut (Rama IV) was a half-brother of Rama III.

Rama IV was born on 18.10.1804 and died on 01.10.1868 at the age of 63 years. He reigned from 02.04.1851 until his death (17 years).

Although well known in the West (mostly because of the book/movie 'The Kind and I') Monkut is not very well known by most Thai. The movie is banned in Thailand. One of the reasons probably is the way the king is depicted in this movie. Watching the movie you get the impression Monkut was a rather dump lady's man. However the opposite is true. King Monkut was a very educated and civilised man.

Chulalongkorn (Rama V) was the son of Rama IV(.

Rama V was born on 20.10.1853 an died on 23.10.1910 at the age of 57 years. He reigned from 01.10.1868 until his death (42 years).

Vajiravudh (Rama VI) was the son of Rama V.

Rama VI was born on 01.01.1881 and died on 25.10.1925 at the age of 44 years. He reigned from 23.10.1910 until he death (15 years).

Prajadhipok (Rama VII) also was a son of Rama V.

Rama VIII was born on 08.11.1893 and died on 30.05.1941 at the age of 47 years. He reined from 25.11.1925 until 02.03.1935 (9 years) when he abdicated.

Ananda Mahdol (Rama VIII) was a grandson of Rama V.

Rama VIII was born on 20.09.1925 and died on 09.06.1946 at the age of 20 years. He reigned from 02.03.1935 until his death on 09.06.1946

King Ananda was very young when he became king. He was only 10 years old. He only became king because his predecessor, Rama VII, abdicated because he could not reconsile himself with Thailand becomming a Constitutional Monarchie. The first years of this reing Ananda stayed in Switserland with his mother, his older sister and younger brother. He returned to Thailand in 1945.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) was the younger brother Rama VIII.

Rama IX was born on 02.12.1927 and died on 13.10.2016 at the age of 88 years. He reigned from 09.06.1946 until his death (70 years).

King Bhumibol is probably the most well known Thai king in the world.
His reign started on 09.06.1946 at the day of the sudden death of his older brother King Ananda Mahidol and ended on the day of his death on 13.10.2016.

Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun (Rama X) is the son of Rama IX.

Rama X was born on 28.07.1952. His reign began on 13.10.2016. The day his father dies.
